Serving March and the Heart of the Fens

March is one of our core Fenland working areas. We cover the whole town: the Victorian and Edwardian terraces built around its railway heritage, the riverside properties along the Nene, the post-war estates, and the surrounding villages from Wimblington to Doddington.

Site visits to March are free and easy to arrange. We're on the phone seven days a week, 8am to 10:30pm every day, and we book visits at specific times, then turn up when promised.

March grew up with the railways, and its housing reflects it: rows of solid brick Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, inter-war and post-war housing, and newer estates on the town's edges. Much of it sits on reclaimed Fen ground, which shapes how anything in the ground needs to be built here.

March customers call us most for fencing and gates built for Fen weather, bathroom refits in solid-wall terraces, second fix work on doors and floors that have shifted with the ground, brickwork repairs and repointing, and extensions that make the most of the town's generous plots.

We also cover the villages around the town, Wimblington, Doddington, Town End, Guyhirn and towards Chatteris and Wisbech. Fen village properties often come with larger gardens, outbuildings and longer boundaries, and the same free site visit and fixed price applies to all of them.

March rewards a builder who respects the ground it stands on. Reclaimed Fen soil and a high water table change how footings, fence posts and garden structures need to be built, we specify for the conditions on your plot, not for idealised ground in a textbook.

March jobs schedule into our regular Fenland runs, so you're never an afterthought tacked onto a city diary. Site visits happen when agreed, work starts when promised, and the same person who quoted your job sees it through to the final walkthrough.

05Know Your Property

Common Property Issues We See in March

Fen Ground Movement

March sits on drained marshland, and the peaty soil moves seasonally, shrinking in dry summers, swelling in wet ones. Doors stick, cracks appear, fence posts lean and garden walls shift. We build for this ground: deeper footings, properly set posts, and realistic advice at the site visit.

High Water Table and Garden Structures

The water table in and around March sits high for much of the year. Timber in ground contact rots faster here, so fence posts, decking frames and gate posts need proper treatment, depth and drainage detailing to last.

Damp in Solid-Wall Terraces

The town's Victorian terraces have solid walls that need to breathe. Bathrooms and kitchens without proper ventilation suffer condensation and mould; repointing with the wrong mortar traps moisture. We use materials suited to the age of the building.

Wind Exposure on the Flat Fens

There's nothing between March and the weather. Fencing, sheds, gates and decking take a battering from Fen winds, and lightweight installations don't survive. We build exterior work heavy-duty as standard here, because it has to be.

Ageing Roof Carpentry

The town's Victorian and Edwardian roofs have often had a century of piecemeal repairs. Rotten bearing ends, woodworm and undersized alterations are common. We handle carpentry-related roofing repairs in-house, and full re-roofs through an established roofing firm with 30+ years' experience.

Worn Period Floors, Doors and Stairs

A century of use leaves its mark on March's terraces: doors that have been planed past saving, worn stair treads, gapped floorboards. We repair what's worth repairing, replace what isn't, and match new joinery to the profiles already in the house.

Shared Boundaries and Long Fence Lines

Fen plots often have long, shared boundaries, and ownership isn't always obvious. We recommend agreeing the fence line with your neighbour before work starts, then we build it strong enough that the question never comes up again.

We're reachable seven days a week, 8am to 10:30pm. Fen weather means storm-damaged fencing is a common urgent call, ring us and we'll give you an honest timescale.

Yes. Close board fencing with properly set posts, quality treated timber and solid fixings is our standard build in Fen areas. It's built for the conditions it will actually face, not a sheltered showroom garden.

Yes, much of our March work is in Victorian and Edwardian terraces: second fix repairs, bathroom refits with proper ventilation, brickwork repointing with appropriate mortar, and storage built into awkward period layouts.

Larger jobs: 25% deposit, milestone payments, balance on completion. Smaller jobs are usually 50% upfront and 50% on completion. We accept bank transfer, cash and card.

Yes, £5 million public liability insurance on every job, and a workmanship guarantee on the finished work, with terms explained when we quote.

Yes, 8am to 10:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays, so booking a site visit doesn't mean taking a day off work.

Yes. We assess the brick and existing mortar first, then repoint with a mix appropriate to the age of the building, hard cement on soft period brick causes spalling, and we don't make that mistake.

Call 07773 646563, email charlievidlercarpentry@gmail.com, or use the contact form. We'll book a free site visit, measure up, and give you one fixed price for the job, no obligation.
